I saw two really good "chick flicks" " the eternal sunshine of the spotless mind (for a change, Jim Carrey was good!) and Just Like heaven..

How about you lot?

I really liked those ones, too. Eternal Sunshine was whacked, wasn't it? Although Just Like Heaven was much lighter I really liked it. I want to rent the DVD to see if they did a commentary. I love the actors' or directors' commentaries. They're soooo fun!

eeh i wont even comment lol..

watch anime : escaflowne, ghost in the shell, Last exile, ninja scroll, berserk, cyber city oedo

As for films... anything foreign is good lol.. Try Chow Yun Fat - a better tommorow, city on fire, once a thief, god of gamblers..

god of gamblers is particulary funny because chow acts like a child in it when he looses his memory .. absolutely fantastic

Any Bruce Lee film is good especially both enter the dragon and way of the dragon

If that don't take your fancy and you still prefer mushy stuff try Big Blue featuring jean reno by Luc Besson.. its not ridiculous overblown mush it seems more realistic

chow yun fat is one of my favourite actors now.. i wish there was an unlimited supply of movies made by him

Not sure if it's a chick flick, but I know that a lot of women like High Fidelity.

High Fidelity rocked! LOVE that movie.

I also want to see Big Blue now that Celebrin's reminded me about it. Any movie with Jean Reno is a movie I know I'll love.

I think just about any movie with John Cusack somehow qualifies as a chick flick, regardless of the content. I really liked High Fidelity regardless of whether or not it's a chick flick though.

    Celebrin,
I used to watch a lot of anime back in the day, though now I pretty much only find myself watching Miyazake films (having kids & all). Berserk was a surprisingly good series. I like Kenshin, especially the OVA's (Trust & Betrayal). My favorite series is probably Evangelion or Serial Experiments: Lain, and I always love watching Cowboy Bebop.

Beyond all that, I mostly watch a lot of kids movies these days, and I honestly don't mind that much. I love cinematic Martial Arts movies (Crouching Tiger, Hero, etc), the Matrix movies, the Star Wars movies, the Lord of the Rings series, the Harry Potter Series and I seem to be a fan of most movies with Ben Stiller. Chick flicks are alright, though I don't really like the ones on Lifetime too much.

I imagine I'm leaving stuff out. Oh well.

    I LOVE KATE WINSLET.

there I said it okay! Now can we just move on?

What's wrong with Kate Winslet? She's the greatest of the greats. I love her sooo much. She was so good in "Eternal Sunshine...". What a great movie that was.

I just watched "The Last Samurai" despite Tom Cruise. Ken Watanabe's in it so I had to see it. It was pretty good.

A guy i spoke to a few weeks ago (about my car insurance as a matter of fact, summed it up nicely-all movies that have tom in them are just Tom playing Tom-he's wooden.) NOW, Brad....different story. I actually really liked Meet Joe Black, but then again it has Anthony Hopkins in it.

Is it wrong to say that brad looked mighty fine nude in TROY? Perhaps I think it is wrong..sorry.

I'll just move away slowly not making eye contact with anyone

X (just don't look at me)

umm brad in troy is funny man .. hes like no.1 poser.. every time the camera goes to him hes posing heroicly

hes on like a boat and hes stood at the front of it on the statue at the front posing.. its just so funny

as for tom hanks, hes like the average joe of cinema.. not keen on him.. he cant do any movies that involve anything extra ordinary

you know you all love Arnie

'So many movies...so little time.' ;) One of my unfulfilled passions.

If you like Ken Watanabe, see 'the other samurai movie' of 2002 with him in it:

'Tasogare Seibei' (English title: Twilight Samurai)

As for chick flicks: this winter I started 'Chick Flick Lunch' at work. The gals and I brought in our favorite movies and watched them at lunch on Tues and Thurs. I have too many favorites, but off the top of my head I would recommend 'Shirley Valentine' (great line: this is my friend...Wall) and 'Enchanted April'.

ive seen twilight samurai.. its quite good.. not amazing or anything but it touches the heart and has some decent storyline, gd enough action in it

im kinda bored of the matrix... its had its moment

watch a better tommorow.. that owns

If you enjoyed the Matrix trilogy, you'll love these two movies:

The Thirteenth Floor, and Dark City. Both have very Buddhistic views of the universe through manipulation of the perceptions of the people within the movies- by way of a Virtual Reality simulator in Thirteenth Floor, and a colony of humans unknowingly being experimented on by aliens in Dark City.

I disagree..... he was Tom Cruise. I wouldn't describe his performance as 'outstanding'. Had it been so, I think he might be in the running for an Oscar. But that's just my opinion.....
  • edited May 2006
    Tom cruise - War of the Worlds (2005) 4 stars --Collateral (2004) 4 stars--The Last Samurai (2003) 4 stars--Magnolia (1999) 5 stars--Mission: Impossible 2 (1999) 4 stars
    --Jerry Maguire (1996) 4 stars--Mission: Impossible (1996) 4 stars--The Firm (1993) 4 stars--A Few Good Men (1992) 4 stars--Born on the Fourth of July (1989) 5 stars
    Rain Man (1988) 5 stars--The Color of Money (1986) 4 stars--Risky Business (1983) 4 stars

so says the wise radio times..

in collateral tom cruise is mighty fine at acting i say.. that aint tom cruise being tom cruise

yea i know tom cruise i mighty annoying irl, hes just utterly annoying.. did you see when some guy threw some water at tom cruise and he just lectured the guy on how he was a jerk lol or when he was on Oprah winfrey show and he was flying about the couch's lol ..hes turning himself into a joke.. its unfortunate because i love his films.. (the decent ones)

but in films he's ok.. i wish someone would hit him on the head til he stopped being a scientologist but what can you do eh?

he wants to believe hes superman fighting an intergalactic space emperor called Xenu we'll just let him
    do that ..

i think tom cruise and russel crowe are undervalued

My favorite chick flick - The Notebook.

My other recent favorites....Crash, Brokeback Mountain, Hotel Rwanda.

I love Don Cheadle. He is always amazing, but was especially amazing in Hotel Rwanda. That's a sad, sad movie.

yea ive seen dark city.. it has richard O'Brien in it.. Welcome to the crystal mazzeee..

the thirteenth floor... hmm 3 star movie 1999
    radio times says:::
In this interesting, if predictable, sci-fi mystery thriller, computer technician Craig Bierko finds himself the main suspect when his boss — the mastermind behind a virtual-reality simulation of 1937 Los Angeles — is found murdered. Though Bierko's subsequent investigation uncovers plenty of twists and turns, most viewers will have a pretty good idea of the final explanation after the first third of the movie is over. Predictable as it is, this still retains some interest. The computerised 1930s world perfectly re-creates the era, the performances are acceptable and the intelligent script helps each sequence play out plausibly. KB

not sure if i want to bother checking it out...

i find a lot of chinese/japanese films have at least some form of buddhism behind them.. whether it be small or large.. there a lot of samurai and martial arts films which have a lot of buddhism in them. Duel to the death is one.. not a great fillm but worth watching for samurai/martial art fans

Okay...I finally saw 'Brokeback Mountain' last night...and I don't see what the big deal was. Or rather, why anyone would make a big deal out of it. My husband and I watched, thinking it might be a 'romantic' movie...and instead we both were struck by the fact that these guys were cheating on their spouses. From a Buddhist POV (if there is such a thing)...it was sexual misconduct - due to adultery.

We had an enitre thread going on Brokeback Mountain.

I agree with you about the cheating thing, but if you look at it from the Buddhist POV, then you really have to consider how sad it is that homosexuals feel the need to hide their way of life because of how they are treated by others. Which was really the main focus of the movie.

Just finished "War of The Worlds" and I actually really liked it. And you know what else is weird? I sincerely thought Tom Cruise was really, really good in it. I think it was one of his best performances ever. He played the ass#$%* at the beginning really well and then when he softened he didn't over do it. He was quite restrained and true to the character. I'm really quite amazed. I never knew he was so good. His intensity was perfect for the subject and action of the movie and the dark colour tone and quality made him a little more raw. I was very pleasantly surprised. The mark of a good movie to me is feeling drawn into it and I definitely was. Whenever I put it on pause to make a cup of tea or go to the washroom I was surprised at how quiet everything was around here. lol! I really got pulled into it and it became very real for me. That hardly ever happens to me.
