Buddhist Studies

Looking to get into buddhist studies for my masters. Anyone know of any good online programs?

  • I wonder if Naropa University has an online program?

This is their distance learning page. I don't think they offer degrees via online, but they do offer low-residency degrees. But they might be a resource to ask about potential programs that do allow online. Most graduate level degrees seem to not be available online, probably due to the higher level of requirements, but it's worth asking.

  • A lot of online degrees don't offer certification. So they are just an experience and no working world credential aside from being better to speak of at the job interview than saying you spent the last year unemployed working on your world of warcraft character.

  • UC Berkeley has a Buddhist Studies program. You could check their Distance Learning dept. to see if any of those courses are offered online.

    have you contacted an educator
    such as Dr. John Kieschnick
  • You could always get an MA in Religious Studies at an accredited university near your home. With a graduate religious studies program you can specialize in a department with a good Buddhist studies division, even if that just means one or two highly specialized professors. You will need to learn another language. This depends on what kind of Buddhism you wish to study, Indian (sanskrit, pali), Mahayana (Chinese, Japanese, Tibetan). Let us know what direction you wish to pursue and we can help narrow programs.
