Is this a suitable subsitute for a Dharma Book for an altar?

TheEccentricTheEccentric Hampshire, UK Veteran
Could I just right down the four noble truths and eightfold path or just an extract froma a sutra on a peace of card instead of a whole sutra Dharma book to represent The Buddha's teaching's on an altar?

  • If I'm not mistaken, any of Buddhas teachings are acceptable.
The Heart Suttra is a good choice I remember reading.
Just be sure whatever you choose, it is kept clean and can even be wrapped in a cloth, in a respectful way. In cherishing and respecting what is written.
Do what you can, it is the intention that counts.

Yes. Even one mantra is a summary of Dharma. Your idea is better though.
  • I agree with the previous posters. Actually, it seems to me what's necessary is that the sutra or verse or message mean something to you, personally.

@TheEccentric -- Anything you do is better than a pre-packaged sutra.

As it says in the pre-packaged "Dhammapada," "Better your own Dharma [truth], however weak, than the Dharma [truth] of another, however noble."
