Sorry, I don't have 44 minutes to spare to watch this video, but in terms of responding to your headline, I don't there is any rule of thumb...although our culture seems to think there is.

There are nice guys who finish last, but there are nice guys who finish first (or at least successfully). There are ruthless guys who finish first, but there have been ruthless guys who finish in their own ruination.

I did watch the last few minutes of vid, and certainly they concept of collaboration can lead to success, too.

I just don't think that the cliche is any more accurate all the time than are most cliches. Life is complicated, and so is the road to success or failure.

All depends on what you define as nice and what you define as last. I think though it is just a statement to support those lovely dudes who havnt had the best luck in love. Hang on in there fellas if i can find a gorgeous girl so can you. As phil collins says " you cant hurry love". Ill shut up now before my ego takes over, i go off on a tangent and start dishing out advice.

OP, could you summarize the points in the film? "Nice guys finish last" in what context? What are the arguments?

Plenty of nice guys finish first. Humans are complex enough that things can't be reduced to mere biology. We have sophisticated brains and kind hearts that can overrule aspects of biology.

The video focuses on game theory, specifically the "prisoner's dilemma," in analyzing altruism or cooperation/selfishness. The conclusion is basically that cooperation for mutual benefit is always the best strategy. But we already know that don't we? Nevertheless we live in a world where cheating is part of the game.

I agree with hermitwin. Just looking at his resume, I would hardly say he's an embarrassment to science.

I agree with hermitwin. Just looking at his resume, I would hardly say he's an embarrassment to science.

I am stumped by Florian's comment as well. I knew a little bit about Dawkins
prior to that comment, and after I read it I researched Dawkins' background.
I mean the guy is respected and renowned in scientific circles all over the world.... what could possibly negate all his education, recognition and scientific research?
The fact he's an ATHEIST?

You MUST be thinking of someone else, you don't have to agree with Richard Dawkins' Atheistic view to know about the great deal he has contributed to the great study of science.
