One of the Brahma Viharas is the cultivation of Mudita where you practice taking joy in other people's joy.

I'm sure you're right. I'm probably just going through a grumpy period. ;)

You can absolutely celebrate V-Day!! I did and I'm a Buddhist. Got my wife a trinket at the jewelry store, went to dinner at one of our fave eateries, got home, got jiggy and slept like a baby.

I'm with Spiney on the commercialism. Christmas really sticks in my craw.

I got my wife a dozen red roses for Valentine's..she got me a bar of ( very nice ) soap.
Do you think she is trying to tell me something ?

I can't speak on the wife...but I think the mods are trying to
    tell you something.

Usually when getting jailed...they give you one phone call for
a reason. Your supposed to be sitting and thinking about
what you've done....well..yes, later you can sit and chat on the phone
all day..but those have to be with someone who will accept
    collect calls...:D

    Just sayin' .....

In the UK we have lots of TV ads in the run-up to Christmas, depicting these idealised happy families with well-adjusted kids ( and grown-ups! ) nice houses and plenty of money. But I know that for a lot of people it just isn't like that - for all sorts of reasons ( and apparently divorce lawyers get very busy in the New Year! ).
So I do my usual bah-humbugging and then try to make the best of a bad job. What does help is thinking of it as a pagan festival - which of course is really what it is!

  • Hopefully the families who don't have nice houses and plenty of money, don't have flat screen TVs and cable vision. So they can be spared.
The rest of us who are forced to watch advertising on TV must have to suffer the most.

In the UK flat screen TVs seem to be something of a priority. Even I've got one!

no, bcos attachment and romantic love will only lead to unbearable suffering when separation inevitably happens.

No Mother's day too! Father's Day, Birthday, even Vesak Day! No! No! No!

    Yes.
Hang on for some shattering news.
There is no 'Buddhist' view of Valentines Day.
The universe does not give a hoot whether you celebrate Valentines Day or not.
You are going to have to make your own decision...
    Sorry about that.

Sigh! If only we are not led like sheep and let the shepherd decide...
