Of course, any person from almost any walk of life can put forth an effort to make the world a better place. It's not as if people who play video games are somehow devoid of compassion for the world around them.

Though often when people are chatting in MMOs they leave me concerned for the future of humanity ;) But I know there are a few good eggs out there and that is all it takes.

I think so. Say what you want, but I think EVE online is a great example of how gamers can transcend cultural, political, racial, and religious borders. In my corporation in the game, we have Dutch, German, British, Brazilian, American, and many others besides. Not once in voice chat do any of us argue. When we're online, I am not a Caucasian Buddhist american. Nor are my corp mates an Atheist Latin Brazilian, or a Muslim Arab Brit.

We're all members of CT Industries LLC. We work towards common goals, harnessing each of our strengths to cover for our weaknesses. Our differences are shared and celebrated, each of us happy to talk about our culture and beliefs if the topic comes up. And we all listen, and remain respectful. Structures of gender and sexuality are of no concern either.

I think that is a valuable thing for our species as a whole, if we could all act like that all the time, not just in a game. I know I linked this song a long time ago, but give it a listen again. And really listen to the words said. Let it sink in.

    We are EVE.
