  • any word or few words repeat again and again for a certain time would help to calm the mind

that calmness would go away after we come out of the calmness we could built in the mind

we must go beyond the calming mind

that means contemplate on dhamma (be it a buddhist teaching, christian teaching, hindu teaching, muslim teaching) and try to get the grip of it (not the face value but the deep meaning of it)

in that way we would be able to develop our mind for the better

Omm Yum Yum Oo Long Cho Col Ate Yum... If one says it long enough.. the words seem to melt in ones mouth....

Or my favourite of favourites "Om Mani Padme Hung" which seems to pop up each and everyday... Starting with, as I move towards the cushion to begin meditation in the morning, then at times during the day and then again in evening when about to sit on the cushion again....

The reason for this mantra, is simple "The Jewel Is In The Lotus" Which for me means "What we seek, we already are " so meditation is just unlocking the Jewel so to speak.... :)

In vajrayana, sometimes called mantrayana a mantra can be anything.

What is important is intent, good will and intentsity.

For example in Sufi mantrayana, the mantra is 'ho'
    Pronounced 'Who'

... the bodhi cabalists are not even allowed to say their mantra - the tetragrammaton.

... and now back to fav talk ...

    Nam Myoho Renge Kyo

Sometimes I chant: saddharma puṇḍarīka sūtram –Sanskrit cause it has a even tone.

I understand it more inwardly when I do it in my langauge: I devote myself to the Sacred Law of the Dharma or I devote myself to the Sacred Law of the Lotus Sutra. (I use one of the two)

It doesn't quite have rythemic feel like the Japanese version. The second one is hard to pronounce. So, I flucuate if I'm not just meditating.
