I'm vegetarian, was vegan but backslid a little, however am getting back into it. I can't justify consuming dairy/eggs knowing what I know about the lives of dairy cows and male chicks. I am pretty suprised at the number of meat eaters here....I guess I thought it would atleast be 50/50.
I saw a few posters mention vegetarinism as a "sacrifice". I do not see getting rid of meat as a "sacrifice". The people that have a hard time of it have the mindset that they are depriving themselves. I don't view animals as food so there is no deprivation. I don't feel guilty about not eating meat at people's homes. I always make sure to let people know that my family(wife, 2kids) don't eat meat/eggs/dairy. I usually offfer to bring something. I don't expect other people to feed me so it's rarely a problem. Most people are very accomodating. I saw a few people mention the "suffering" of vegetables...it is very unlikely that plants "suffer" however, we know that animals do suffer. Even if plants do feel something you have to feed a lot more plants to animals than any human would require so I would still eat plants as it reduces overall suffering. I realize that just by my mere existance other beings are suffering...that doesn't mean i say oh well screw it pass the big mac. My goal is to reduce suffering as much as possible.
