A common pain-reliever can also be used to cope with existential dread - anxiety arising from thinking about death - according to a new study.

Acetaminophen or Tylenol is an over-the-counter pain medicine used to relieve minor aches or fever. The new study has shown that Tylenol can also help reduce pain experienced after thinking about death or uncertainty of life.

For a long time I used leftover codine and tramadol from the doctor for pain relief. Recently I ran out and started using acetaminophen, I noticed that my mood improved as well and things generally seemed brighter, I just wrote this off as being relief of whatever pain I was having. Then today I heard about this story and saw it in a new light.

Just in case someone thinks of using acetaminophen to treat their existential dread and doesn't read the full article acetaminophen in large doses can be fatal.

  • I used to take Benadryl, and it worked for me, so it makes a lot of sense.

I just spent years studying Buddhism and countless hours meditating and contemplating deep spiritual philosophy to deal with my existential angst, and all this time what I needed was a Tylenol???

    I want my money back.

Jack Daniels and coke works for my existential angst. No prescription needed.

But, seriously, there has been lots of interesting work in this area. Magic mushrooms help people with intractable depression, Ecstasy can help to reduce Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, LSD with counselling can reduce recidivism in alcoholics.

With such 'recreational' drugs it is very difficult to get the licence to do the research.

We spend too little resources on addressing mental health problems.

It's interesting that a 'pain' killer such as Acetaminophen should also address the 'suffering' of existential angst.

Morphine seems to do the same thing -addresses the physical and the psychic pain of people.

    There is clearly a connection.
