Incense - What do you use?

edited January 2012 in Meditation
I live in a small town in a rural area. Because of this I make most of my purchases on-line, usually through Amazon.
I've purchased a lot of incense but have been pretty dissappointed with most of what I've bought.
What types are used in temples? What do you use at home? What would you suggest?
I'm currently using Morning Star sandlewood, very subtle not overpowering.

Nag champa is my favorite. I also like sandalwood. In general I prefer flowery or spicy fragrances. I get mine from a local head shop.

I buy mine from Shoyeido. It's quality stuff and they have inexpensive samplers (the link) to help you make up your mind. I like Gozan.
  • Just some incense from 7/11, don't know the name or type, I just buy it. Maybe it is cinnamon, I don't know.
  • Nag champa! I get it from the flea market. The price is right and it smells great.
  • The incense guy on Craigslist. Just some random dude who (it turns out) works at Auric Blends and sells boxes of 6000 sticks of up to twelve different scents randomly mixed together. These are rejects from the production line - seconds if you will - but so cheap that large bundles can be burned outdoors inexpensively and such a volume lasts a long time. Also use cone incense in spicy scents - cinnamon and opium - in a Tibetan incense burner (handcarved, painted box with slotted lid) found in little bags of 12 cones for a dollar at a Goodwill store nearby.

    Nag Champa.

  • I like Nag Champa... here is a good way to try a sample to see which appeals to you:

  • I buy incense from pretty much anywhere. I've gotten it from Walmart, Spencer's Gifts, amazon.com, Mrs. Green's (an organic/vegetarian market in the Northeast) and the random spiritual shops that I happen to pass. I really like the Nag Champa brand that others have mentioned. :)
  • What do you use at home? What would you suggest?
I can't stand incense, it makes me sneeze.

    Spiny :p
  • I like incensce and it also evokes pleasant memories, I don'r burn it at home very often though.
  • Nagchampa, but not in a closed room for meditation.
  • Clearly the most popular incense is Nag Champa. I always thought Nag Champa was a brand (@). After some research I found that it isn't. I'll find me a box and try it out.

@genkaku I have an order on the way from Shoyeido. Thank you for the suggestion.
  • I love the way Nag Champa smells *before* burning. Once it's burning, for some reason, I find it, well, like a burnt wood smell.

One of my all time favorite meditation incense is "Kewda" an Indian (stick) incense that is not easy to find. The last time I bought some, I got two cases of it, so it's been quite a while. But I got it here - from The Purple People Monastery in the Ozark mnts.:

Kewda has a medium, not-too-sweet scent that lingers nicely in a room for hours.
    Enjoy!

I don't think I've met an incense I don't enjoy. Well, maybe patchouli.

You might check out your local flea market if there is one - I live in a fairly small town as well, but fortunately there's a seller in the one here.

I like roses and lotus fragances.
  • @ fireSong -

Oooh patchouli... a very strong trigger scent for me. But in a really good way. :-)
