Does anyone know how to get out of it. It's really nasty in here!

  • Examine the nature of the realm rather than the content.

    There you will find a one taste regardless of what you are looking at.

    Then examine where exactly that one taste is.

    Keep observing until you resolve the perception.

    The solution will be obvious.

    That's what I understand is the most important thing to do. Having arguments about nothing, is pointless. Pointing out dukkha, whilst it may be useful, is not without it's consequences if not applied skilfully.

    Right cushion - support me in the coming weeks!

    Yes, famous story about a monk that got his mom out of the Hell realms. (Ullambana Sutra-- quoted below.)

    If I remember correctly, someone needs to do merit, transfer it to you. And that includes vegetarian feasts... yup. Anyhow, I'll put out some food for you if you're a hungry ghost and transfer all the merit from this evenings feast to your karmic account.

    "The Buddha instructed Maudgalyayana to place some pieces of food on a clean plate, recite a mantra seven times to bless the food, snap his fingers to invite his mother and then lay the food on clean ground. The Buddha said that this would satisfy the hunger of the hungry ghost. Maudgalyayana’s mother was then reborn as a dog under the care of a noble family. However Maudgalyayana wished for his mother to be reborn a human. He again went to the Buddha for advice. The Buddha then told Maudgalyayana to offer food and drink to 500 monks on the 15th day of the 7th month, the day that marked the end of the rains retreat. By performing this deed, Maudgalyayana created the merit that caused his mother to be reborn as a human."

  • There's an interesting section in The Buddhist Religions about how those stories of generating merit by giving to monks became popular around the time Buddhism took off as a wealth-extraction engine.

    Thanks for your comments guys. I have realized I've been dipping in and out of it all my life. Ill-will and wrong thought, speech and action, are definite passports here and meditating and reflecting on the mental state and practicing good with right speech thought and action are the way forward. All merit appreciated! Perhaps I can get myself out guided by the example of Kshitigarbha. Truly a great boddhisattva!

    Let's see if I can be more tolerant of all your views and comments over the coming weeks and guided by compassion perhaps I can help one or two of you like I have been helped this week. Sense of humour ain't gonna change though, sorry!

  • THE JOKER

    At the centre
    of the spinning circle
    sits the joker
    with a mirror
    in his hand,
    reflecting all to everyone
    to help them understand.

    His face is fierce, yet gentle,
    his eyes, they pierce you through,
    you cannot escape his gaze
    no matter where you go,
    no matter what you do.

    His smile is warm, he draws in you in,
    he is so calm, why are you
    so confused by him?

    Your thoughts are like a raging storm
    between the whirling sky and sea,
    nothing seems certain any more,
    nothing’s how it used to be.

    Once things were clear in black and white,
    you thought you knew the wrong from right,
    you drew the line, and cut it fine,
    between the day and night;
    but now your world is crumbling,
    there’s nowhere you can call your own,
    nothing’s solid anymore,
    not even cities made of stone,
    not even your own body,
    not even flesh and blood,
    not even skin and bone.

    The sun and moon are falling on your head,
    the stars are tumbling down,
    flowers sing like angels,
    in the winter town.

    The dead are living, the living dead,
    fire turns to water, water burns instead,
    silence is so full of sound, time stands still,
    you hear the earth turn round.
    Your life flashes before you,
    is that thunder, or the beating of your heart,
    you don’t know if this is the end,
    or something new about to start.
    You don’t know if you’re dreaming
    or if you are awake,
    and as you go on spinning
    you see the joker’s mirror
    reflecting every move you make.

    You show him good,
    and he will show you evil;
    you show him truth,
    and he will show you lies;
    you show him life,
    and he will show you
    how all that’s living dies.

    You show him happiness,
    and he will show you sorrow,
    you show him yesterday,
    and he will show you tomorrow;
    you show him poverty,
    and he will show you wealth;
    you show him sickness
    and he will show you health.

    You fall as if forever, falling
    spinning round and round,
    tumbling into empty space,
    without up or down
    and thus you will go on falling
    until you understand
    how opposites arise mutually,
    then you and the joker
    will dance, hand in hand.

    Then you will know the truth:
    that all is of one taste;
    then you and the joker
    will have the same face.

    Great one @taiyaki :bowdown:
  • When it comes to the hell realm, I take my inspiration mainly from the Angulimala Sutta.
    Now at that time a clod thrown by one person hit Ven. Angulimala on the body, a stone thrown by another person hit him on the body, and a potsherd thrown by still another person hit him on the body. So Ven. Angulimala — his head broken open and dripping with blood, his bowl broken, and his outer robe ripped to shreds — went to the Blessed One. The Blessed One saw him coming from afar and on seeing him said to him: "Bear with it, brahman! Bear with it! The fruit of the kamma that would have burned you in hell for many years, many hundreds of years, many thousands of years, you are now experiencing in the here-&-now!" [3]

    Then Ven. Angulimala, having gone alone into seclusion, experienced the bliss of release. At that time he exclaimed:

    May even my enemies
    hear talk of the Dhamma.
    May even my enemies
    devote themselves
    to the Buddha's bidding.
    May even my enemies
    associate with those people
    who — peaceful, good —
    get others to accept the Dhamma.
    May even my enemies
    hear the Dhamma time & again
    from those who advise endurance,
    forbearance,
    who praise non-opposition,
    and may they follow it.

    For surely he wouldn't harm me,
    or anyone else;
    he would attain the foremost peace,
    would protect the feeble & firm.

    Irrigators guide the water.[6]
    Fletchers shape the arrow shaft.
    Carpenters shape the wood.
    The wise control
    themselves.

    Some tame with a blunt stick,
    with hooks, & with whips
    But without blunt or bladed weapons
    I was tamed by the one who is Such.

    "Doer of No Harm" is my name,
    but I used to be a doer of harm.
    Today I am true to my name,
    for I harm no one at all.
  • @anataman. Sounds like you have a good intention and plan in mind. Kshitigarbha is quite special. In Japan he is known as Jizo. Check out the six rings on his staff. They represent the six realms. For me thinking of Kshitigarbha gives very happy thoughts.
