Harmony

Music can communicate, harmonise, transcend the lyrics or need for words. Will Dharma be available as a musical? Will we Western Dharmaists be stuck with Japanese flute and Tibetan temple cacophony? Will flamenco be used to illustrate Dharma Pride?

What do you hear through the grapevine?

    @lobster I heard a story of a zen master who was to give a lecture to his students.
    A bird was singing in the tree nearby, he waited for the bird to finish then walked off.
    He knew the bird would give a better lecture.

    I consider birds singing a bouquet of musical dharma.

    @Lobster

    We are that musical!

    There is a harmonic vibration that all of existence exudes.
    Experience it just once and the basis of all music becomes apparent.
    If such a harmonic vibration is the fundamental Dharma, then the musical to watch for is the one that gets enough of itself out of the way to let the harmonics that have always been playing...be heard.

    Well I never . . . or maybe I did . . .

    Thanks guys always good to hear . . . silence . . . I believe the Mahayanists say: 'Silence is sound and sound is unheard' or is that another empty tune . . . :clap: .

    Kia Ora,

    The music (Dharma Symphony) that is softly yet constantly playing in the background of our every day existence...At times it's loud enough for us to hear clearly, other times it's drowned out by the noise of mental/monkey chatter....

    Metta Shoshin . :) ..

    Indeed.

    On an 'intro to meditation' course, we were asked to sit in a quiet temple and listen mindfully. The 'distractive' sounds became our meditative focus. The same technique can be used in noisy temple environments and even the presence of very loud music (too advanced eh?) . . .

    Are we absorbed by the music or observing/being mindful of the effects . . . ? It is quite natural to require overtly spiritual or uplifting music. Then one day metta/love songs are heard in a different way perhaps . . .
