an old question

genkakugenkaku Northampton, Mass. U.S.A. Veteran

Popping up on the mental radar this morning....

In times past, it was customary for Zen teachers approaching their death to write a small summing-up verse and then die. Ta Hui is said to have written:

BIRTH IS THUS
DEATH IS THUS
VERSE OR NO VERSE
WHAT'S THE FUSS

You are now free to return to your regularly-scheduled fuss. :)

... or anyway, that's my take.

    Trains are noisy,
    And buses smell,
    But cycling is
    A ticket to hell.

THEN WHY NOT TO MEDITATE ALONG.

    Which is how they avoid
    Being in Chinese curry.

    Alsatians are fierce,
    And bark loudly too,
    Which is how they avoid
    Being in vindaloo.

I can't help thinking perhaps this thread began with a serious intent...... Ah well....

    An angry cow
    His milk went sou
    'r un the farmer
    Sliced the meat

    An angry farmer
    His taste buds sou
    'red meat, he tossed
    No family fed

    The cow that died
    The farmer cried
    His family hungry
    His gult spent

    Daily apologies
    To his cows, he said
    No more. No more.
    Will we eat meat.

    From greens and leave
    'smiles and sweets
    Spread on the table
    Time to eat

    An angry cow
    No longer frowns
    His friends are safe
    From farmer's knife.

    Writers block at death's door.

    Before inked with intent,
    a blank sheet of paper,
    better speaks of my end
    than of this fool's vapor.

    @Shoshin That's awesome. I'm stealing this.

  • Blind to the left,
    Right and reverse,
    While crossing the street,
    I'm drafting this verse.

In some traditions we have 'songs of realisation'.

I rather like the wails of duckha and other poems ...

'Done' or 'Undone' would be quite a lot to say. :)

The Four, the Eight the Five.
    Simplified, I am alive.

Think well, say well, act well.
    I see hear, speak,
    touch, eat, smell.

Is it True? Is it necessary? Is it Kind?
    Sit, Consider and find.
    Mind.

    Reduce it down to "simplify"
    Breathe in, breathe out.
    And then, I die.
