    @Shoshin says Happiness is............

A child who smiles at the old geezer hobbling along on two canes in the grocery store.

I think in modern English, happiness can stand for the ultimate happiness (however you might choose to term that), and it can stand for relative happiness, part of the natural flux of human emotions.

If you look at the way it’s used in Bhutan, a Buddhist country where GDP was famously rejected in favour of GNH (Gross National Happiness), you can see it being used in the greater, more holistic sense. They’re not seeking national pleasure so much as wellbeing or contentment.

I don’t think we need to denigrate the search for happiness, just because it can have that relative meaning of pleasure, gratification, and fun. Thanissaro Bikkhu said we should take our need for happiness seriously, and I find that a very empowering teaching.

@adamcrossley said I don’t think we need to denigrate the search for happiness ...

I don't think we need to denigrate the conditioned world at all, only to be mindful of it. Samsara is nirvana, the unconditioned inseparably interdigitates with the conditioned, a happy thing that arises out of a set of conditions is still a happy thing.

Is it a kind of "you're getting closer... you're getting closer"

    or is it like

And here are my happinesses (and you show and tell)

    ?

Made me think a connection to:

“I give you the end of a golden string,
Only wind it into a ball,
It will lead you in at Heaven's gate
    Built in Jerusalem's wall.”

Pharrell Williams video always makes me happy.
    Music and dance.

    Things that make me happy?

    • Happy shiny people
    • Kindness
    • Animals
    • The wind
    • Knowledge and wisdom

In fact so many things ... maybe I am an addict? I am happy with that 🙃

This moment. (In the context of other moments; thus producing genuine care and compassion, but careful not to worry.) ;)
