    Maybe something like?:

    Abandon evil,
    Do good,
    Meditate.

The 9 word answer to the same question is similar:

    Abandon harmful ways,
    Practice virtue well,
    Purify the mind.
I really like this one--and not just because it's almost a haiku.

    Did we receive the answer?

We have received many good answers, but (so far) not the Burmese monk's answer.

    Okay, here's another hint:

The quote involves both knowledge and action.

I love this! But remember the first clue....

Clue 1: The first word is a verb.
Clue 2: The answer involves knowledge and action.

Attain wisdom through direct experience. (I'm only going to guess once per new clue.)

This sounds like the slogan of some radical (but well-meaning) fringe Buddhist group.

I might make this into a bumper-sticker, actually.

    DD,

The hints so far were: Answer starts with a verb, and contains 'knowledge' and 'action'. :)

Oops, I missed this one last time--sorry, Stephen!

I like it--and you're paying attention to the clues, which is by no means a given.

Actually, the second clue was that it involves both knowledge and action, not that it contains them.

I think it's time for the third clue.

Clue #3: The first word is "Know".
  • edited March 2010
    Know and practice the Path.

Zendo, sorry about my misquoting the clues.
  • edited March 2010
    Know truth through insight meditation.

(There are too many things that can be said in a mere five words, even with clues. lol)

I'm pleased to announce that you are the first person to get the first word of the answer correct!
Zendo, sorry about my misquoting the clues.
No apology necessary my friend--you noticed the clues, which is a good start! ;)

I know--but I'm hoping someone will "accidentally" get one of the other four words right, and then I can say, "Aha! You've got two out of five!"

After that, arrival at the solution should proceed at an accelerated rate--even taking into account Dhamma Dhatu's continued missing of the clues. ;)

Keep in mind, folks, according to zendo's willingness to admit when two correct words have been used:

"and," and "truth" cannot be the second word.
"practice," and "through" cannot be the third word.
"the," and "insight" cannot be the fourth word.
"path," and "meditation" cannot be the fifth word.

That being said: "Know how to liberate yourself" would be my guess.

I'm going to take an off-clue turn just because this is bugging me and making my head hurt. I was thinking to myself, what is the core teaching of Buddhism? What are the most important concepts that all of the teachings support and reinforce?

Regrettably, I can no longer respond to every post individually (there are too many), so I'll start responding "by the batch."

Ironically, Pietro Pumpkin's guess "Know what yer mamma knows" has correctly discovered the second word!

    We now have:
    Know what _____ _____ _____.
Come on now, people: save federica's life by bringing it home!

First of all Dhamma Dhatu, good for you, remembering the first word!

That you forgot the second is overshadowed by the fact that your guess is closer (in meaning, if not in wording) to the correct answer than any other guess so far.

For the first time, we can speak of being "in the ballpark"...

Well, zendo says it involves knowledge and action.

So "know what [three action words]"

    Know what to act like?
    Know what right action is?
