The Buddha's Teaching in Five Words
Comments
Z: Maybe turn them into a book called Buddhism In Five Words.
S9: Such a book could only have 5 pages with one word on each page. ; ^ )
Or a whole lot of empty pages, to meditate on, (on emptiness that is.)
Smiles,
S9
I wrote mine first, so as not to be influenced. Then I went back to read...
but alas:
no verb. : ^ (
My bad,
S9
Abandon knowledge, avoid all action.
Still reading,
S9
Know: no knowledge, no action.
I included this, because it’s so good.
Still reading,
S9
Hum:
How about:
Know what action is knowledge.
Still reading,
S9
You have come late to the game, so you may not know the "riddle" has already been "solved".
I've wondered whether I should post a "disclaimer" in the initial post, letting people know the question has been answered already.
But then again, that might take away the fun for newcomers.
Do you want me to explain?
Thanks for doing that!
Thanks for chiming in.
Yes, I was just answering as I read along, and having a good old time.
Silly me ; ^ )
I think many people with far less time on their hands, will just read the question and answer it...and that is okay too, don't you think?
Anyway:
It is probably just more fun to say our own 5 words, very creative, even if you do not actually win by guessing someone else's words. Puzzles were never my strong point, any old way.
I found that some of the guesses were actually far better than the actual answer.
REALLY DARN GOOD! : ^ )
But that is just my opinion.
I would just let it ride if I were you. Maybe someone will say something OUTSTANDING.
What is the hurry to pull the plug?
It is a little like life. It isn't all about the winning, but how we play the game. ; ^ )
Smiles,
S9

Is a keeper. ; ^ )

Good man, have you never seen in the world a young tender infant lying prone, fouled in its own excrement & urine?" = five words x 4 + 2 (MN 130)
The Buddha did not say this. Please quote.
Is 'Self' a stain?
Love is a social emotion or state. I can love them but would not take refuge in their doctrine for liberation. There teachings are not Buddha-Dhamma.
The Buddha did not say this. Please quote.

S9: Are we now going to claim that an encyclopedia is just a big bunch of 5 words alone beside each other?
All in a row?
“Cheating at something; isn’t improvement.” ; ^ )
Re: S9: “Dis-identifying with knowledge is freedom.”
The Buddha did not say this. Please quote.
S9: Ah Dhamma, you lost track of the game we are playing. : ^ (
We were not quoting the Buddha. We were saying our own 5 words that summed up Buddhism for us.
I’ll give you a chance to collect yourself b/4 continuing to play the game with you.

In your opinion, certainly not in mine. ....but be happy having an imaginary paddle, S9.:)
.
Life sucks, get over it!
In this, it's not the destination that's important, but the striving toward reaching it... following the road.
S: It's a strange but interesting fact that this thread opened the minds of many people before the answer was ever given, and continues to do so even long after the answer was known.
S9: Yes, Buddha gave us the answer...we just have to figure out WHY it is the answer. ; ^ )
And:
I am enjoying the little practice of condensing my thoughts into the 5 words.
I used to really enjoy writing haiku, a Japanese form of poetry, which also has a very strict structure allowing only 17 syllables. At first the limited number of syllables in the simple 3-line poem seems restrictive, (lines 1,2,3 have 5,7,5 syllables respectively.) But after a while, when you get into the swing of it, the structure itself lends itself to some happy accidents of wisdom, and even serves up great beauty at times.
In ancient times they would often use haiku as a party game, as it became so very popular. Sometimes someone would say the first line, and the second person would say the second line, and so one, just for the fun of it, and even perhaps the edification of those present.
Haiku still remains quite popular, and has many magazines devoted to it in present day Japan.
Example: by Basho
An old pond!
A frog jumps in—
the sound of water.
Can you see/feel the Suchness in this? This is meant to be a feeling event. You not only see the event as if you were present, you also feel the silence within and perhaps between the words. Much like the awe of simple beauty can often introduce on our heart.
Haiku keenly observes the moment, which pertains to nature, or human nature, ostensibly, (almost like encapsulated mindfulness), yet at the same time it speaks eloquently of equanimity within each and every moment.
S: In this, it's not the destination that's important, but the striving toward reaching it... following the road.
S9: Yes, perhaps this is because when we finally get to our destination, we find (surprisingly) that we were (it was) HERE all along, and perspective was the name of the game. : ^ )
Warm Regards,
S9
Life sucks = 1st Noble Truth
Get over it = 3rd Noble Truth
