I'm surprised nobody has suggested monk, wandering ascetic, guru, or shaman... Or superhero crime fighter :ninja:
How about all the above mentioned qualities rolled into one superhero? How cool would that be?

    That would be extremely cool!:)

I don't have this skill… and the Samañaphala Sutra doesn't elaborate much in this.
  • To be able to fly....or levitate one needs to reach the fourth jhana... and then other supernormal abilities also might be attained.....the ability to see past lives, read minds, see beings in other realms...etc.

Dunno if this is a joke thread but anyway.

Jhana usually refers to the altered state of consciousness achieved with advance concentration practice (breath meditation or staring at a dot on the wall, whatever).

There are also the Vipassana Jhanas, those are abviously a result of a vipassana practice ;)
  • but jhana by itself doesn't give the skill to fly… at least not inmediaty. in my case it helped me remember past lives and read minds (but I don't do it often, at have not used to completely read someone else's mind).
  • Chop wood, carry water.

I am a professional musician and although I find that music can can bring great joy I also have a difficult time performing in drinking establishments. Unfortunately, most of the money I earn comes from these places. It is hard for me to watch people hurt themselves with alcohol - which seems to have the exact opposite effect as Yoga.

I find teaching to be rewarding because it provides me with the opportunity to 'give back'. It also helps me appreciate all those who have helped me along the way.

Where I find the most value in my music is when I give it away - performing music for the sake of the music. I feel that I am in service to the music in the sense that it comes from somewhere else and my part is to hold the instrument and perform the physical aspect of plucking the strings or pressing the piano keys.

I believe that music is a gift but it is not our gift to have but our gift to give.

    how about an airline pilot?
  • I am a soldier. I have served 5 years in the Marine Corps and I am currently serving in the US Army, but unfortunately, I can't leave the Army until 2015. I was turned on to Buddhism about a year ago and have since began going back to school to become a Registered Nurse. I have no intentions of returning to the military after 2015. Strangely, I have never had ANY interest in health care until I decided that I didn't have a choice. After so many years of helping to maim, and murder people, I decided it was time to help people for the better. Just the act of making that first step has already increased my ability to feel compassion for others and I can honestly say that I am very excited about helping sick, injured, elderly, and helpless people.

My point is that making the switch from an "unwholesome" career to one that jives better with Buddhism has been very helpful in my path. If you have any doubts about what you do, just make a career change. It will not be the end of the world. You might just find that it makes you a better person. And being a better person has nothing to do with your income.

    Best of luck,
    Mr. Fell
