I read somewhere that the Buddha lived with a bunch of men in the woods.

Well he may have been a queen, king, Hindu heretic, alien, human or whatever but what has that got to do with me? What if he had been a crazy holy man? It is hard enough being sane . . . let alone having to deal with half forgotten teachings from antiquity . . .

What happens if I am just unsuited to all this being kind, being wise etc?

Can't I just be normal?

    You can only be yourself.

  • I am convinced that "normality" is a product of hubris. Which is also closely connected to what is perceived as "reality."

"Arrogance of the Third Kind (hubris)", in a word, sucks.

Carl Jung said, "Show me a sane man and I will cure him for you".

I think we can infer from that, that being sane ('normal') is actually abnormal, and our normal state is one of abnormality.

It's like one of those paradoxes eh?

    :D

  • ahhh, I just caught myself. I'll let my above comment stand, but it does come from a POV of suffering.

Hmm. I'd say that the purpose of Buddhism is to be better than yourself.

I thought the purpose of Buddhism was to see beyond the (false) self?

(Sorry for being a smarty pants)

I was expecting that from someone, and almost included it in my post, but then I though no, let them have their fun.

    Maybe.
What I said was what I felt in response to the OP rather than a critique of the purpose of Buddhism.

Normal just says that you are part of MY tribe. Just another delusive equivalent for what makes one feel comfortable or predictable.
