Hello from across the pond 
We're in the throes of heavy rain (again) and storms expected tonight. I did read Australia might get a tsunami of about 1 metre on the East Coast but nothing solid and nothing compared to the rest of the world. I hope everyone here who lives in the expected paths stays safe.

@NZcivildefence has advised that an earthquake near Russia has created tsunami activity.
We may expect strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges at the shore from midnight tonight.
We were also warned to stay away from the coastal areas , not that easy when you live on a small island.

I’m not a bot, although sometimes I feel like one. I joined because I was upset that my dharma friends were making incense offerings on their forearms to the Buddha. I’ve since come to terms with this ceremony and realize that some people need it to deepen their practice, others deepen their practice climbing mountains. Each to their own, the way isn’t static.

I’ve also read a lot, first in Buddhism and later in various spiritual traditions. I’d quite like to read Lama Surya Das’ books, I was just having a look at his bibliography on Wikipedia and some of the titles appeal to me. Thanks for the tip!

Welcome RobinH, and thanks for the extensive and eloquent introduction!
When you are just getting started it can take a little research before you get familiar enough with the different streams of Buddhism in order to pick something that suits you. But I see from your usage of Buddhist terms that you have been exploring the territory — very good!

I think you'll find we're all a bunch of imperfect Buddhists here, with plenty of attachments we don't want to let go of.
Most of the regulars left have been practicing a while so don't seem to ask many explicitly Buddhist questions anymore. So if you're wondering about something, that isn't being talked about feel free to ask.
