My daughter and I went swimming on holiday, in Lago Maggiore. In the spring, the lake is principally fed by the melted snows off the Alps. The water temperature was around 7°C. Stayed in for 20 minutes.
There was a local club of Scuba divers, all wrapped up in cold-water insulated swimming gear, all of whom thought we were either brave or insane. We explained we were British. That seemed to cover both bases!

Never stop looking up. They are always watching in amazement at us humans.
