improving vocabulary

genkakugenkaku Northampton, Mass. U.S.A. Veteran
In times past, there were vocabulary-building encouragements that included such lines as "use a new word ten times in a day and it is yours."

Today, I wonder if reversing the process might not also have some benefits ... "erase one word from your vocabulary in a day and see what happens."

It's just an experiment. What word would you choose, assuming you wanted to experiment?

My choice for the day is the word "because."

Big Elephants Can Always Undertstand Small Elephants, because that is how my son learned to spell it.

Sorry, can't do away with because!

    Because

We're off to see the wizard, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
We hear he is a whiz of a wiz, if ever a wiz there was
If ever, oh ever a wiz there was, The Wizard of Oz is one because
    Because, because, because, because, because
Because of the wonderful things he does

Seriously though, you can't lose a word from your vocabulary once you've got it, unless you have dementia of course.

Now where was I, how do you spell that word again? Big elephants can always understand small elephants - there is even something insightful about learning how to spell it.

Can we get rid of the word BIGOT, or shall we just get rid of the 'worlds bigots'

Oh I love this thread already,,,

The experiment is sort of like Buddhism: No one can unthink a purple cow, but they can practice.
  • Why would they ?

    Why would they ?
@citta -- Perhaps as a means of checking out too-casual assumptions?
  • I neither assume nor refute purple cows. Casually or otherwise. :-/

    Why?

We rarely need to know why. When we ask, it's mostly for our own egos.

I'll let someone else ask the obvious.
  • That asking ' why ' is an egoic activity per se may not be as obvious as you think

Are any of you actually getting @genkaku's point, here....?

Just to clarify, for those who aren't - genkaku is proposing removing words form your vocabulary that do nothing for your personal progress, and actually form hindrances to constructive Mindfulness.....

'because ' seeks to justify a position, which may on the surface appear logical, but is actually, examined more deeply, intransigent.

MY word to eliminate, would be anything with she suffix -ist.
The moment that word leaves the mouth, it describes a divisive opinion, and is both antagonistic and extreme.

    I love words.
What you mean you noticed . . . [unkind] :p

I spent a long time living without 'no' before it became a movie hit - Yes Man not to be confused with the excellent 'The Yes Men'

I often misappropriate, misuse or make up words. So I am going to give up 'uploss'

How do we know what in the long term is ' good for our progress '?
I frequently find that what is good for my progress varies.
In fact I would go further. It's the very words, fears, aspirations and people that impede my imagined progress that I should retain..they are clear messengers.

So, the summary of that is... that you'd stop speaking altogether?

It's just a simple question/word-game.... It's not supposed to be a harrowing, soul-searching exercise, ferkrissakes.....

No I would not play word games to do with aversion or attraction to words.
They are just words ferkrissakes. Life's too frigging short. There are bigger fish to fry.
