Jubilee Surrounded : 1 Progressive vs 20 Far-Right Conservatives (ft. Mehdi Hasan)
I found this debate quite interesting...A real eye opener ...especially the guy called Conner 22 minutes in.

Mehdi Hasan does a good job dismantling their arguments...
What Jubilee cut out would be interesting to see.

Mehdi Hasan talks to Emily Maitlis and Jon Sopel on The News Agents podcast about his Jubilee experience.

While I love Jubilee, I'm not a big fan of this format. I don't feel like it leads to very good conversations/debates. It does a good job of testing the 1 in the hot seat. Most of the time they seem to hold up pretty well, but recently Jordan Peterson was in the seat and failed pretty badly.
I also found it a bit too aggressive and confrontational to be an enjoyable watch, although I have to say also that the genre of talk shows doesn’t really suit me, I rarely stay interested for long.
Yes, some of the opinions expressed by the MEGA mob around Medhi can, for various reasons, make people feel uncomfortable. Sometimes it’s not just the extremity of their views, but the unsettling recognition that certain aspects might, in some way, align with one’s own, that can be even more confronting. For me, it’s important to face that discomfort when it arises.
The content isn’t meant to be 'enjoyable': it’s about exploring what makes MEGA people tick, and what that reveals about human nature, particularly how easily some can be influenced or drawn in.
There were moments where you could sense a shift, where at least a couple of them began to recognise the flaws in their own logic once certain things were pointed out.
This is what I appreciate with Jubilee. You can see over the years how the discussion changes minds, often not right in the moment, but later on if the general topic comes up again people's opinions have changed to include good points others have made.
Then for me it fails at being good content. No offence.
No offence taken @Jeroen. Yes, it’s not what one would call ‘good content,’ but for me, observing this aspect of human nature on display is somewhat intriguing.
Different strokes for different folks
There are lots of worthwhile things that add to flourishing and growth that aren't pleasant in the moment. Exercise is a good example, or something like the Buddhist practice of contemplating death, visiting charnel grounds, etc.
Yes, I agree with that, but a lot of those things have noticeable payoffs, like exercise. At first it is difficult, then you begin to notice the positive effects, and in the end it is like eating potatoes, perhaps unspectacular at first but really nutritious in the end.
I thought that most of the "arguments" presented by the right, didn't attempt to debate Hasan's points, and what they did offer was merely some juvenile notion about owning a Lib.
Even the way they took turns ... everybody rushing the chair to see who gets there first? And that mad rush comes after the previous occupant got voted off the island. Very Darwinian.
I think that's a pretty good summary of my feelings on the format. I don't think its very constructive.
They rushed in like lambs to the slaughter, their arguments cannon fodder for reason to swiftly dispose of, poorly armed and ill-prepared.
But I suppose this is what happens when hatred and anger cloud one's mind.
But perhaps that is the point, that most of them are not very reasonable people and are looking for an outlet for their hatred. Reason may not convince them, it’s about what they feel.
Yes, a case of thoughts feeding feelings & feelings feeding thoughts .
