Hi, Sachiko, wax_on, starbreeze and sky dancer.

Welcome to the site! It's lovely to meet you all.

    Hi.

I'm Jamie and I come from the UK, Nottingham. I'm 14 and have been practicing Buddhism for about 4 months. I thought I'd find an internet forum just so I have people to talk to about the whole thing. Anyway, nice to meet you all, you seem like a pretty good bunch.
  • edited February 2010
 14? Nice. We got ourselves, I think, the second youngest person on the forum. :)
Glad to have you aboard our growing number of young buddhist, Jamie, I think this is a good forum filled with a good bunch of people. Feel free to join us over on the young buddhist thread: http://newbuddhist.com/forum/showthread.php?p=86920#post86920 Just go to the last page, it's a bit silly right now... but feel free to talk about whatever you would like on there... or on the main forum as well, obviously.

    Namaste,
    Ashley

Welcome to all the new members.

Starbreeze, I don't know what your college textbooks are like, but the religion course I had in college gave me a totally warped view of Buddhism. I think the best thing to do is to visit a Buddhist temple or center if there's one near you and get a taste of the real thing. I know that made a big difference for me.

    Palzang
I would love to find a Buddhist temple, but due to my college schedule, it is difficult to find one that I would be able to attend currently. There are some in the area, but my courses interfere with their schedules. I guess it will have to wait for summer, unfortunately.

I took an interest in Buddhism prior to registering for the course and I had read various books on Buddhism prior to beginning the college course. So far, the class is approaching Buddhism from a historical aspect (starting with a brief overview of Brahmanism - please forgive my spelling), so it is more about the development of the religion rather than the actual practice (at least so far).

    Thanks for the advice!

    Hi,

Thank you so much, Palzang. I appreciate the welcome as well as the tips on meditation. I've tried it twice since reading your post. The first attempt was on the floor in the loft of our house, which is a pleasant place to be. Unfortunately, I have neck and back problems, and even though I leaned up against a wall, it still started to hurt. On top of that, the dog (Max) kept licking me in the face, as he's not used to me being on the floor. Today I tried again in the living room in a chair when no one else was home. Once again, Max was distracting me. He's not used to seeing me without something on my lap- a computer, a book, whatever- so he kept laying his head in my lap wanting to be petted. He also kept barking because he always barks if he thinks I'm going to sleep. (I'm getting very annoyed with him.) I'll have my husband move a chair into the loft and try up there again. I will put something on my lap to keep Max off. I really want to stay in the loft because I like the mood up there. I didn't expect to run into frustration.

    Hope (Brenda, actually)

    Brenda/Hope,

Congrats on starting to meditate! It's not easy at first and it feels uncomfortable. I would suggest finding the most comfortable seating arrangement you can. The neck and back problems should work themselves out in time (have you seen a chiropractor?). I would also suggest not having the dog around! But just take it slow, one step at a time. Don't worry about if you're doing it "right". Just doing it is what is right. There's no such thing as a "good" or "bad" session. You just do it. They do make special chairs for meditation, you know. I forget the name of the place, zen something or other, but you might want to check that out. They're designed to give you support while still allowing you to sit in a good posture for meditating.

Now-is-Reality, you must be in Florida...lol....oh, that's right, you said you're 'floating around in space?'
then you may just well have the option of 'zoning out' all of those with old ideals...:) I know that's what I try to do!
(And by old ideals, i mean those that have been proven not to work when it comes to advancing the human civilization into a brighter future for the bulk of mankind, not just 'the chosen few')

Hi from me as well Wondering. I'm new too. i've been creeping around the skirt-tails of Buddhism my entire life I now postulate, but only began recently to take it to another level. I wish you well on your spiritual journey. it's loaded with wonderful (and traumatic) history,
love stories, pain, suffering, beauty and knowledge that seems to quench my soul's thirst.

Just doing the new member thing.

Have come back to practice and Buddhism after a long absence - doing who knows what (there are unsubstantiated rumors that I followed the path of Ceiling Cat.)

Now, I'm back and startlingly more serious about Buddhism, but not necessarily serious in general otherwise.

So in looking for on-line community, I've come here.*

    * All other details will wait for my tell all autobiography.

Also a newbie, just getting my bearings in the Buddhism shindig and enjoying the learning experience. It's been quite a while since I've been so darned interested in anything, let alone something so fulfilling.

I really like reading, though I prefer nonfiction (or at least exposition as opposed to narration), so the Suttas have been extremely interesting so far. I've also managed to read every single one of my closest library's books on Buddhism, and I've started pulling them in from one 45 minutes away  I'm also a huge organization buff, so the hierarchy of the Tipitaka just plain appeals to me. Though I know not to dwell too much on that intellectual stuff, heh.

But that is what pulled me in -- the rational nature of the religion. As I noted in another thread, one of the biggest hooks for Buddhism was a quote of the Buddha in which he basically said not to trust his system on faith; rather, test it out, and adapt it based on your observations. I think it says everything about a philosophy when it can stand up to personal scrutiny, instead of relying on some higher-up saying "Do this because I say so."

THAT is why I`m drawn towards it.
