Noam Chomsky is one of them. His work in linguistics is very important to his work in media analysis and foreign (and domestic) policy analysis. He cites everything, and is meticulous, even with observations that seem matter-of-fact to anyone who does not limit their perceptions to the parameters of corporate media.

I also think linguistics is very relevant to the practice we discuss here.

Back to school. Back to school, to prove to Dad that I'm not a fool. I got my lunch packed up, my boots tied tight, I hope I don't get in a fight. Oh! Back to school... back to school... back to school. Well, here goes nothing.

They don't come around that often; in my amateur opinion we're short of mega-brain-influence in the "living today" category. So I'd have to assume "living today" means "recent" and say Lugwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951). As far as philosophy of language is concerned L.W. is one of the most influential among scholars today. He blew the roof off of language; revealed what it can and can't do. I'm glad I had the chance to study his work in college.

That's a good question. I'm more familiar with past thinkers than I am current ones.

In the Buddhist realm, I'm quite partial to Bhikkhu Nanajivako and Bhikkhu Nananda. I don't know if they're the best, but I find them interesting enough to read.

Outside of that, it's hard to say. I think neuroscience is giving rise to a new breed of philosopher, and a few worth mentioning are Steven Rose, Carl Craver and Sam Harris. Daniel Dennett is also a contemporary philosopher that I'm somewhat familiar with and find interesting.

Deng Xiaoping. Granted he's gone in 1997, but his pragmatic thinking, "Socialism with Chinese characteristics", transformed hundreds of millions of lives for the better, as a whole.

  • Oh! I get it. We get to specify the aspect of our culture within which our nomination would be found.

I gotta say "Curb Your Enthusiasm" LARRY DAVID. The observations he makes on that show are basically profound (way beyond Seinfeld!). Stuff we all know about but never could fully see. I don't like the bawdy and crude stuff, but that's part of life not something LD forces into the show or makes up.

Yes. LARRY DAVID. In the ******mainstream****** media he's got to be way up there with Einstein and Newton.

Now it's mainstream, popular culture we're talking here. You have a better nominee? Would be fun to debate this. Unfortunately I've never seen a Bart Simpson or similar cartoon-based show. That's going to limit my ability to discuss. Sorry. Duh
