Mantra

lobsterlobster Crusty Veteran

Mantra works!

Good in the beginning (when you may be unaware of the benefits)
Good in the middle - regular practice
Good in the end - phew bead counting done ;)

My fav. is:
OM MANI PEME HUM
often spelled 'ohm manic padme home' (not in this dimension)
or as the night crow just reminded me 'Cor core Caw' ...

What are your favourite?

  • Hi @lobster

    I'm glad you opened this thread. I've been reading quite a lot of the texts and mantras available (made available actually...by you) through the Lapislazuli-texts-website.

    I've learnt to play Om Mani Peme Hum on the harmonium and it is beautiful. Hopefully not getting attached to the music. Or is that not necessarily a bad thing? shrugs Yesterday I tried to recite it 1,000 times with a friend, but we just got close to 100...

    I also like the one quoted at the end of the Heart sutra:

    "Gyatei Gyatei Hara Gyatei Hara sou Gyatei Bo ji so wa ka."

    ...

    Hannya Haramita ShigyoooOOoooooo... :smile:

    Just when you thought you had a mind, body and voice ...

    Mantra, a revelation of the inner, manifest in the outer.

    You really can hear, experience and change yourself through mantra.

    Here is four for the price of one wot I learned.

    The compassion of Chenresig
    The wisdom ...
    The protection ...
    The second Buddha ...

    Cool! I made it into a comic a while back ...

    ... whatever your mantra notice:

    • The quality/timbre of your voice is related to your mind state/being
    • Increased focus on conscious breathing is a simple way into regular practice
    • Sound rite. Ritual regularity. Silent Voicing.

    Buddha speaks. Listen to Your Self.

    Really nice thread @lobster

    I’m not so much into mantra recitation but I am learning a few new things!

    I have a frivolous devotion to Vairocana -- we can call it a schoolyard crush. As a non-Tantrika, the only mantra I've ever received any degree of instruction in is

    唵阿毘羅吽欠嚩日羅馱睹鑁
    oṁ a vi ra hūṁ khaṁ vajradhātu vaṁ

    For some, mantra is the whole of Their Way.
    Not every mantra connects for us.

    For example:

    Breathing in ...
    Breathing out ...

    is an internalised mantra/mindfulness.

    That continual awareness and internal vocalisation is a complete practice ...

    Did you try it for ten days? mmm ... sometimes we need Buddha fiends rather than Buddhist friendlies ...

    Something for the ladies?

    I'm not sure this qualifies as a mantra, but I find myself saying it often enough that it might as well be one.

    The words "I wish ..." seem to arise in my mind rather frequently. I always finish the sentence with " ... I was right here, right now."

    @Fosdick are you somewhere else? ;)

    I like the idea of returning/remembrance which is one purpose of mantra ...

    As a theist of some sort I use 'Cod is Greater' in English, 'God is Greater'. The closest Buddhist mantra might be >

    Hear and Know ...

    While reading through the Releasing of the Flaming Mouths, I came across this two-part mantra, for ordained or laypersons, associated with an offering of food for the hungry ghosts.

    唵啞葛嚕穆看薩哩斡塔哩麻南啞牒耶奴忒班荅奴忒
    on akaro mokan sariwa tо̄rimanan achōyadoto hantōdoto

    唵啞吽癹吒莎訶
    on a un ho sоwaka

    I recognize bits of the Japanese as transliterated Sanskrit, but have no clue what some of the Sanskrit is. I'm not sure if the Sanskrit version has survived the times. (EDIT: after some searching, I found the Sanskrit to be oṃ akāromukha sarvadharmāṇām adyanutpannatvāt.) The last line is a string of bījākṣarā (seed syllables):

    on = oṃ
    a = a
    un = hūṃ
    ho = phaṭ
    sowaka = svāhā

    The Japanese pronounce Sanskrit so very "uniquely!" It is easier to pronounce this way, I will say, though.

    I have four mantras I do daily.

    I start with Om Mani Padme Hum. I then do the Green Tara Mantra (Om Tara Tutare Ture Svaha). After that I do the Amitabha Mantra (Om Ami Dev Hri) and then I round out with the Om Shanti Om mantra.

  • federicafederica Seeker of the clear blue sky... Its better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt Moderator

    If I am reciting a Mala of 108 beads, I generally use the Green Tara Mantra, punctuated by reciting 'Om Ah Hum, Vajra Guru Pema Sidhi H'ng' at each of the 36-bead marker beads.
    I preface each recitation with the Heart Sutra, and at the Guru bead recite the six-syllable Seed Mantra.
    You could say I like to cover the bases...

    As a MantraYana devotee relaxed intensity is key.

    other ways of describing mantra:

    • Relaxed focus
    • Real Meaning
    • Say it like you mean it
    • Be Sound

    Don't think this is some second class meditation. It is raw sound attention.

    Is that like Bud Light? Or Bud Heavy? Or even Bud-ho?

    I had a lovely shikantaza session this morning... it was early, the birds were in the garden, the light was still blue-ish from the sky lightening above. I had coffee first, then I sat for about 30 mins, it was good.

    Even if bad, it is good.

    Mantra induces calm. In fact simple words such as

    • CALM
    • PEACE
    • RELAX

    can sooth the fevered brow ...

    or how about

    • HEAL
    • SOOTHE
    • STRENGTHEN

    combine that with visualisation and focus
    and practice until useful
