The most irritating person on social media, particularly on Reddit

If you've ever browsed Reddit, especially the Zen thread, you may have come across Ewk... a very peculiar user.
He is quite a challenge for any Buddhist navigating the internet.

Have you brought your concerns/challenges to him? It feels kinda icky that you’re coming here and talking about him…is he here in our community?

Oh wait…it might be Lobster…he’s harmless 🤣. Peculiar? Yes. A challenge? Yes, sometimes I have no earthly idea what the hell he’s talking about…but I’m down with him like 4 flat tires! 💯

No, it is not me. Don't use Reddit. BUT irritating and challenging are some of my superpowers. o:)

For example, on social media (I suggest you change from Reddit to Lemmy) you are more likely to find me... and be challenged in a different Way...

Thanks to @Vastmind for pointing out I am harmless AND I too have no earthly idea what I am talking about. Long may it continue.

    Meanwhile, some harmless pointers:

    • Zen like meditation is meant to be challenging
    • What is so difficult or peculiar about Ewk for you? Have you tried not engaging? [lobster top tip]
    • Can you provide an example of how you or indeed anyone is not on some level, 'peculiar'?

    meanwhile...

Just needed to vent a bit? Quite a while ago now this forum we had an active member who was much more disagreeable and pedantic than myself. It was frustrating at times, but it kept things lively.

the original thread in reddit was r/zen and its was so impossible to coexit that some people do another r/zen without ewk .... hahaha funny. In fact this guy is some kind of fundamentalistic controversial Zen.

    the book

Buddhism is not Zen. Mindfulness is not Zen. Zazen meditation is not Zen. Zen is a name that began with Bodhidharma and includes the Zen Patriarchs of China and the Masters that followed him, such as Huang Po and Joshu and the others in the Mumonkan, and even Tung Shan. They taught no practices, no means and no attainment. As Joshu said, "We are all Patriarchs now that Bodhidharma has come." The Zen conversation is characterized by several memes, one of which is the Four Statements of Zen. These memes have largely been abandoned by those who claim to be Zen Buddhists today. Other memes include Negation (no teaching, no attainment, no wisdom), Zen Dialogue or Dharma Combat, Conceptual Thought, and of course Sudden Enlightenment. The Sudden Enlightenment meme is one of the most ignored memes in Zen. The majority of those claiming to teach Zen Buddhism are preaching the Buddhist religion. They preach a path to inner peace, they preach mindfulness, and they put their faith in a practice called zazen sitting meditation. They claim this is Zen. What Zen Masters taught any of this? In contrast, even a brief review of the Zen Masters that we all agree are the beginning of the lineage, Huang Po, Joshu, Mumon, these old men teach no sitting meditation, no inner peace, and only a sudden enlightenment that does not rely on any means and cannot be attained through any effort. This book contrasts the writings of the old Zen Masters with those today who claim to be Zen Buddhists, but are not Zen.

I haven't studied much Zen myself, but I understand that there is/are sects of the sudden enlightenment school. Personally I don't see much of a problem for someone arguing for their school's point of view. I think its not just on others to understand the counter points, but its actually a good thing to hear opposing views. In learning what they think and why you disagree it gives you a better understanding of your own views.

As much as I think we generally like to think that we can believe in a Buddhism, and spirituality, that harmonizes with all other spiritual traditions, the fact is many of them have contradictory and conflicting views. In my view, in order to live in a much smaller world where differing visions come in to contact more frequently we need to learn to live with those who's views differ from our own.

Perhaps though, more than offering a concrete point of view Ewk was being some kind of aggressive, obtuse or superior?

Actually @ShanJieshi2 I’d go so far as to say “all views are bad”… the best thing to do with a view is to totally ignore it.

    Exactly so. <3

In fact all of what this irritating oik or eek or whatever she calls herself, seems pretty obvious really... :open_mouth:

[I'll be in the naughty coroner with ewk, if anyone needs a dead body] B)
