Tomorrow is World AIDS day...and in the intention of good sexual conduct...
I wanted to bring some awareness.

World AIDS Day http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_AIDS_Day

From a precept POV :

...' Sexual Misconduct...... Sexually transmitted diseases have increased by leaps and bounds to assume almost epidemic proportions. The whole world was shaken with a rude shock by the advent of the dreaded disease AIDS, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, for which medical scientists all over the globe are struggling, without success so far, to find an effective cure. It is also a well-known secret that one of the causes for cancer of the cervix in women is exposure to several sexual partners.

Here's a another take :

..'True Love
Aware of the suffering caused by sexual misconduct, I am committed to cultivating responsibility and learning ways to protect the safety and integrity of individuals, couples, families, and society. Knowing that sexual desire is not love, and that sexual activity motivated by craving always harms myself as well as others, I am determined not to engage in sexual relations without true love and a deep, long-term commitment made known to my family and friends. I will do everything in my power to protect children from sexual abuse and to prevent couples and families from being broken by sexual misconduct. Seeing that body and mind are one, I am committed to learning appropriate ways to take care of my sexual energy and cultivating loving kindness, compassion, joy and inclusiveness – which are the four basic elements of true love – for my greater happiness and the greater happiness of others. Practicing true love, we know that we will continue beautifully into the future.'

Here's one for US ...

Those sites also have additional info about the disease and stats..stuff like that.

Please practice safe sex out there everyone.
If you can..participate in an event, or recognize your own harmful behavior.
Wear red ribbons this week. Thanks!

Bumped. For two reasons...We always need a good reminder for precepts, hahaha,

And this article I read today "How these funky condoms could save countless lives"

--HIV/AIDS continues to be one of the most prominent public health obstacles many African countries face today. In recent years, the disease -- which had reached epidemic proportions -- has started to decline in Kenya as a result of stronger public awareness campaigns and the impact of local education programs.
While the outlook is positive, campaigners say more needs to be done to continue to reduce the threat of HIV/AIDS in the country -- a start could be made by tackling the stigma surrounding the purchase of condoms.

    http://www.cnn.com/2014/04/15/world/africa/pop-art-protection-how-these-condoms/index.html?iid=article_sidebar

In the US: We have a rise in syphilis...also, both young men and young women are heavily affected by STDs — but young women face the most serious long-term health consequences. It is estimated that undiagnosed STDs cause 24,000 women to become infertile each year....this report captures only a fraction of the true burden of STDs in America.

From the CDC STD report http://www.cdc.gov/nchhstp/newsroom/docs/STD-Trends-508.pdf

Please...don't feel any shame in using condoms and telling guys to use them!

This is a good thread to bring up a read I've always liked...

    'Buddhism and Sex'......
This is an age in which sexual matters are discussed with great openness. There are many who are puzzled to know what the Buddhist attitude towards sex is, and it is therefore to be hoped that the following guidelines may be found helpful towards an understanding. It is, of course, true to say that Buddhism, in keeping with the principle of the Middle Way, would advocate neither extreme puritanism nor extreme permissiveness, but this, as a guiding principle without further specification, may not seem sufficiently helpful for most people.

In the first place, we must distinguish between the rules undertaken by Buddhist monks for their own conduct, and any guiding principles for lay people......

Not to lessen the importance of the topic, but just an observation. "safe sex" takes on new meaning once you've seen a few episodes of "Sex Sent Me to the ER"
