    It's all that remains of a particularly bothersome member....

    No, seriously, the Artist painted it at a time when his wife was seriously ill with a brain tumour.
    There is much symbolism regarding both the frailty of the human frame, and the brevity of life, which can change at the turn of a card... and often, no matter how we carefully plan, the 'joke' is on us.... the box is symbolically shaped as a cross, religion being but a 'cover' an desperate refuge in the face of adversity; the bubble-wrap the protective element; he wanted to shield his wife's head from harm, and to afford her protection, but it was a flimsy effort in the face of her condition. When the tumour was finally removed, it was the size of the glass marble.....
