I have been collecting quotations for as long as I can remember. I have also been hassling the ever-patient and long-suffering Creator of this Site (Brian, to most of you!) for a quotes patch on the main menu page so that when we come on site, we are greeted by one of the countless pearls of wisdom available today. Well, needless to say, the guy's a busy man, so he's given me the all-clear, bless him, to post a quotations thread.... one way of getting me off his back! Jus' kidding Brian! :)

So from here on in, guys, use this thread to post any little gems you feel might inspire, amuse or instruct. And for my part, feel free to use anything I post..... It's all re-cycled knowlege, anyway.... ;)

So here goes:

"Weigh, within your heart, the true advantages of the energies of Love, Compassion and Forgiveness, against those of Anger, Fear and Resentment.
Then Choose."

This is what you shall do: Love the earth and the sun and animals, despise riches, give alms to everyone that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labour to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence towards people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown or to any man or number of men, go freely with powerful uneducated persons and with the young and with the mother of families, read those leaves in the open air of every season of every year of your life, re-examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency not only in its words but in the silent lines of its lips and face and between the lashes of your eyes and motion and joint of your body.

"If it looks like Wisdom, but it is not loving, then it is not Wisdom.
If it feels like Love, but is not wise, then it is not Love.
Like the two wings that enable a bird to fly, Love and Wisdom are Interdependent."

I have always tried to utilise this creed when particularly peeved by my kids..... ;)

Learn to Respond, not to reACT.

    Stop: Think -
And if your next action were to be your last?

Even the darkest hour has only sixty minutes

Do not keep searching for the Truth - just let go of your opinions

'Karma' means you don't get away with anything.

Learn to 'let go.' It is the Key to happiness.

No matter how difficult the past, you can always begin again today.

The trouble is, you think you have time.

It is not our preferences that cause us problems; it is our attachment to them.

Not getting what you most want, and getting it, can both be disappointing.

    Everything in Moderation. Including Moderation.

"Illumination" does not mean 'Lighting the lamp'. It means 'Seeing in the Dark.'

You might be able to stop Love going from you, but you can't stop Love coming to you.....

The only real thing that can hurt, is your resistance to Change.

Destiny may give you your Journey, but how you travel, is your choice.

    Denial keeps us in Pain.

Security does not consist in having things, it consists in not wanting them...

"Things are not what they seem.... Nor are they otherwise...."
    (Lankavatara Sutta)

Just because you don't believe something, it doesn't mean it isn't true.

Of all the Liars in the world, at times, the worst are our own Fears.

Every minute you spend angry is sixty seconds during which you could have been enjoying yourself.

A little faith, a little Reverence, for the things we cannot see.

Nothing is so Strong as Gentleness, nothing is as Gentle as True Strength.

He is not a fool who makes mistakes; he is a fool who does not learn from them.

No-one but you can free you from the Slavery of your own Mind.

He who does not think much of himself is greater than he believes himself to be.

If you have a problem and you CAN resolve it, then there's no point in worrying - is there?
if you have a problem, and you CANNOT resolve it, then there's no use in worrying - is there?

    "God has no religion". (Gandhi)

    I am because we are.
(saying of the Xhosa tribe, Africa.)

    Wisdom tells me I am nothing;
    Love tells me I am everything;
between the two, my Life flows.

Learn from all. Judge no-one. be kind to all. And say 'thank you'.

Speak your Truth. Tell it like It Is. There is no reason to do otherwise.

As we walk the Path to Enlightenment, nothing is meaningless, and it all counts.

Truth-telling begins by becoming aware of what you tell yourself.

The secret awaits for eyes unclouded by longing.

Self-forgiveness, Self-Love and Self-acceptance are all essential companions as you walk the Path.

THose with faith die once in their life-time. Those without Faith die a little each day.

Of the two witnesses, listen to your Conscience.

Work should be something made great by ourselves, and in turn, that makes US greater.

Time doesn't go to waste.... it doesn't go anywhere; if Time is wasting, you're wasting it.

    Meditation is how Buddhas pray.

If we want to simplify and deepen our Lives, we must simplify and deepen our Minds.

Renunciation means 'letting go of Holding back.'

"It is better to simply see God in everything than to try and figure it all out" (Neem Karoli Baba.)

There is no way to Happiness and Peace. Happiness and Peace IS the way.

    'Forever' is composed of 'Now's.

"The purpose of Life is simply, to be happy, and to make others happy." HH the Dalai Lama.

    "Trying" isn't "Doing."

"There is only one thing in a rabbit's mind. SEX. There is only one thing in a dolphin's mind. FUN. There is only one thing in a panda's life. BAMBOO.

There are two things in a cat's life. MICE and SLEEP. There are two things in a dog's life. CATS and BONES.

There are an infinite number of things in a human's life. We want sex, fun, food, sleep and pets and what else... This shows that we are all interrelated, and we bear the responsibilities of all of it. And thus to satisfy ourselves we need all conditions to be satisfied.

What the hell? In a perfect life there's nothing you want. You are satisfied with nothing. Only nothing can satisfy you.

In my life? I want all that has nothing. By realizing that everything is inherent of independent meaning, you can want everything without anything."

Ever since I first read the first three Dune books by Frank Herbert, I've been facinated by the quotes at the beginning of each chapter. Only after I became a buddhist and re-read them did I realize their origins. The two that serve as my signature are among my favorites.

"People should not worry as much about what they do but rather about what they are. If they and their ways are good, then their deeds are radiant. If you are righteous, then what you do will also be righteous. We should not think that holiness is based on what we do but rather on what we are, for it is not our works which sanctify us but we who sanctify our works."

"Without attuning body, speech and mind unto the Doctrine,
What gain is it to celebrate religious rites?
If anger be unconquered by its antidote,
What gain is it to celebrate religious rites?
Unless one meditate on loving others more than self,
What gain is it merely from the lips to say: 'O, Pity (sentient beings)"
