Having a fiery spark to one’s nature can serve well, because it often allows you to start things with energy and enthusiasm. Soon though that fiery start must give way to a steady, earthy determination, a carrying through which comes from a deep personal sincerity. The unnecessary things which form such a part of many lives should be let go of, to be carried away by the winds that surround us until there are just the pure clouds, from which the cool waters drift down and nourish us, to perhaps eventually cause the practice to bear fruit. It is a magical process

You are there to get the job done, not to admire the tools. It means getting your hands dirty. It means getting a few blisters. It means missing out on diversions and games. It means getting tired and impatient. It means falling down and getting up again. It means really looking at oneself and not liking what one sees. It means looking at your true nature and deciding what to do.
Do not lump together the idea of avoiding your suffering with the idea of the liberation of your true nature.
Do not lump together your intellectual idea of obtaining personal Awakening with the idea of the liberation of your true nature.
Do not lump together the idea that life will be more comfortable with the idea of the liberation of your true nature.
Liberate your true nature because it is there to be liberated..
Ajahn Brahm has a book all about reaching jhana and what to do with it called Mindfulness, Bliss, and Beyond.
Jhana is controversial. Brahm (and some others) believe Jhana was the novel discovery of the Buddha when he stopped following his current teacher and meditated like he had as a child (Jhana) and became enlightened. Others believe that Jhana was what the Buddha's current teachers had taught but that it wasn't enough and he returned to the meditation he had as a child and that meditation lead to enlightenment. So there is some controversy. Brahm admits that there is no directed thought in Jhana, but that Jhana gives you (on looking back) data on the Annica Anatta and Dukkha which you reflect on after Jhana. And Jhana enhances your concentration to examine those and which is also expressed in a negative sense as freeing you from the 5 hindrances. Brahm believes it's like a flashlight (Jhana) and a map (dharma) that you use together to become enlightened.
I haven't heard the polemics of my tradition how it compares to Brahm's tradition on these matters.
The method in the book I mentioned starts with limiting awareness. To the present. Then away from the stream of thoughts. Then just to the breath. Etc...
I find it quite hard just limiting awareness to the present!

If you want, I can leave an unhinged rant here and you can delete it and ban me. I hate to see someone left out of the fun.
@Vimalajāti such kindness [lobster wipes away fake salty tear].
Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s fiends.

He's soon to be broadcasting a programme on the BBC, and a film is being made about him. Joseph Fiennes will star. I wish him well. He will have to immerse himself in the role, quite literally!

has happened many times...
The shy little boy who lives locked up in his room chooses almost by command of his own adolescence the path of the mystical outbreak. It is very common between the ages of 15 and 20. They rarely work or study hard, they have a lot of free time.
And now he has a laptop, a phone and all the networks, so he gets in there and he goes on a rampage. He can google anything and at the same time run around in circles at high speed. Without a teacher or instruction he becomes a missile with no trajectory but will inevitably fall and hurt himself. they ignore the Golden Rule number 1: "don't play with your mind".
Whenever it happens and our paths cross I offer help and rigour. I rarely succeed now, in my middle age and far from my young novice fervour.
I am a foot soldier against a tide of teenagers armed with thousands of theories and megabytes of googled information.
It's a bit sad to see history repeating itself. So much young energy wasted.
What I experience in this life comes from what I think say and do
I'm just a vibrating bundle of energy flux held together by cosmic karmic glue...

Happy International Women's Day!
I was pleased to see my work making a point of highlighting this yesterday.

Karma is not fixed.
Karma is the ongoing causality - the sum of your past causes and the creation or changing of karma by current actions (words, deeds, actions..)
It is the reality of life and it is fluid.
If you don't like your "Karma", make the causes to change it. Karma is not a trap but rather an opertunity.

I have been taking decaffeinated coffee for quite some time now. And it has made a heck of a difference to both my temperament, and my sleep pattern.
I think I spend too much time on the internet, and could fashion my spare time much better; I refuse to call any habit 'bad' or overlay it with a negative label. That merely serves as self-chastisement or mental 'punishment'. I am not one to have a habit that needs amendment, and then burden myself further by giving it a label that weighs on me further. One thing is bad enough; why embellish it with just more 'badness'...?
We are our own worst enemies. We berate ourselves, and tell ourselves off.
We try to dismiss our foolish thoughts by admonishing our thought patterns..
"Oh come on, don't be silly! Don't think that way, you're putting yourself down, cheer up! Look on the bright side, and get your back into it! Effort, effort, effort!"
That's right, isn't it?
No.
It is not.
Because self-encouragement couched in those terms - is still berating yourself and chastising yourself.
The way to encourage positive thinking, is through positive mental attitude.
"Let's replace that line of thinking with a thought that lets you shine! You have done so well today! You have achieved so much! You have 100% survived every moment of stress and struggle so far! That takes real power and determination! You got this, well done, that's brilliant!"
... Is a much better approach...
