Welcome RobinH, and thanks for the extensive and eloquent introduction!

When you are just getting started it can take a little research before you get familiar enough with the different streams of Buddhism in order to pick something that suits you. But I see from your usage of Buddhist terms that you have been exploring the territory — very good!

I think you'll find we're all a bunch of imperfect Buddhists here, with plenty of attachments we don't want to let go of.

Most of the regulars left have been practicing a while so don't seem to ask many explicitly Buddhist questions anymore. So if you're wondering about something, that isn't being talked about feel free to ask.

I want to visit a local Buddhist community and find an offline Sangha where eventually, if I'm confident enough, I can take refuge

You could take refuge in me. However my dharma-ending precepts are a little too severe even for me. For example I had to hex-communicate myself partly for bad spells...

Let us know what san-gha-gha you find to fund.

I think I might be one of the newest people on this site, why is everybody from 2012 😭
I joined because I wanted answers to my questions about Buddhism from real people in this age of ai and computers, I live in Washington and I'm in highschool (and I get concerned about telling people on the Internet my age so that's the best you're getting) I hope other people still use this bc I don't want to be alone =)

If you remember 2012 was the year the Mayan calendar ended and the world as we know it came to an end...😏We all joined in the aftermath.

This is refreshing to hear. There is something different about even the exact same knowledge coming from a person and coming from an AI.

I have heard some rumblings that some of the younger generation may be having enough and seeking to unplug. I think a video I posted in the AI thread not long ago talked about the possible trend.

Hello there, I’m more recent than 2012, but still a few years ago. I got interested in Buddhism in the aftermath of an episode of hallucinations, thinking that I should really look more deeply into where wisdom came from, and kind of wandered into this internet forum and never left… there are a bunch of fairly clever people here and we all treat each other as friends.

Never mind. It could be worse. You might live in the White House...

You are not alone. But if you have any questions, many people can provide useful advice.
As beginner here is my advice:

    • There is no such thing as a stupid question (though I am often accused of providing stupid answers)
    • Many people here are elderly. For example I am almost dead. Hence the length of time being here.
    • Buddhism is not for everyone. Not for all situations AND can be very varied.

For example my website is not fit for beginners, Buddhists or even myself...

Hi there, my name is Ivo. I became interested and fascinated with Buddhism two decades after seeing a biography about the life of the Tathagata on a television public broadcasting station. l while I was living with my uncle in the SF Bay Area. I started integrating meditation into my life about 7 years ago.I feel very fortunate to have found this website.I hope to gain more knowledge about the philosophy of the Blessed one! My goal is to travel to Thailand within the next year or two once I save up enough money to afford a plane ticket! Blessings

Dear Friends of the Tie Landers,

...Wait... ThaiLanders, where the monks can not be imprisoned. I believe they have a similar project near Florida for orange criminals...

Despite that everything is about our intent and integrity as Ivo probably already knows... (Hi!)

Wat Pah Nanachat an international forest monastery associated with the Thai Forest Tradition, a place to experience monastic life.

Wat Pa Tam Wua a Buddhist forest monastery in northern Thailand that offers free accommodation, vegan meals, and daily Vipassana meditation, making it especially accessible for retreat-style stays

...that might get you interested in Vipassana as preparation?
