@riverflow - Cool! What program did you use to put everything together?

I'm really into this Icelandic composer - like Yann Tiersen meets Craig Armstrong meets Icelandic coolness.

  • @Invincible_summer - that Olafur Arnalds track is lovely (I've listened to it three times already!). What is it about Icelandic music? I wanted to move there several year ago, but now it looks like New Zealand is more likely, on the very opposite end! I love Sigur Ros, though nowadays I find them emotionally difficult for me to listen to.

Angie (who is from New Zealand) and I wrote some songs together and I recorded it when I was living in Nashville a few years ago. Between myself and my roommate I had all the music equipment I needed. Most of the drums were programmed (using a Korg workstation and/or a small Zoom drum machine). All the other tracks, including the singing was performed live by me, bass, guitar, all the synths. The recorder is a 10-track digital machine made by Boss (I've never used programs like Cakewalk or whatever--I'm too old fashioned for that!) You can find the whole album on iTunes and Amazon under the keywords: joker homecoming

I've recorded an album under my own name too, Amniosis, which is more strictly instrumental ambient music ala Brian Eno:

This is on iTunes and Amazon also, but that YouTube page contains the entire album. Believe it or not, that is just four overdubbed tracks of a cheap Yamaha toy keyboard that I just ran through loads of processing on the computer.

I don't record anymore because it is just too much hard work. I am really a fascist control freak in the studio! Except for drums, I do everything live. I've just gotten so lazy and my motivation is no longer there to write, perform, record, or bother with all the marketing. I've got some pieces of music equipment I have wanted to sell off the past few years...

OK, listening to more samples of him, I have a feeling I will be quite a few bucks poorer on payday!

@Jason - As a Vancouverite, I'm very proud that both Skinny Puppy and FLA hail from here.

I'm liking this Jessie Ware gal. Unique voice, soothing synthpop-ish stuff.

Incidentally, my friend's younger brother recently joined Volt 9000, another Vancouver-based industrial band. He gave me an advance copy of their new album and it's pretty good.

Listening/watching this, one of my friend and I's favourite bands/AMVs. We watched it so many times together. He had a stroke last night and I'm really worried about him. I wish I wasn't so far away and there was something I could do. :(

@riverflow - I'd love to be able to play the cello... shame that string instruments are so expensive and difficult to learn! Bach's cello suites are amazing.

  • I'm listening to the ticking of a clock in a silent house early this morning, before anyone else wakes up.

When some television show claims to be listing the "One hundred greatest inventions that changed the world" the lowly clock is never listed, but our search for and invention of a way to accurately keep track of the passing of time created an entirely new world for us. It's not just that most of our modern inventions depend on accurate timekeeping, including the television and computer and even the electricity that powers your home. Before the widespread invention of the clock, we got up when the rooster crowed, we ate when we were hungry or the food was ready, we worked until the job was done or the sun went down.

There's something inside that hurts my foolish pride
To visit the places we used to go together
Not a day goes by that I don't sit and wonder why
Your feelings for me didn't last forever
Girl I love you so much that sometimes it's such
I'd walk a mile with a stone in my shoe
And that's the price I pay for loving you the way that I do
That's the price I pay for loving you the way that I do

So keep that phone out of my way for the things I must say
Are empty if you don't believe they're true
And that's the price I pay for loving you the way that I do
That's the price I pay for loving you the way that I do

I love you so much that baby it's such

    need to see the dancing^

    [1st Verse]
She Was More Like A Beauty Queen From A Movie Scene
I Said Don't Mind, But What Do You Mean I Am The One
Who Will Dance On The Floor In The Round
She Said I Am The One Who Will Dance On The Floor In The Round

    [2nd Verse]
She Told Me Her Name Was Billie Jean, As She Caused A Scene
Then Every Head Turned With Eyes That Dreamed Of Being The One
Who Will Dance On The Floor In The Round

    [Bridge]
People Always Told Me Be Careful Of What You Do
And Don't Go Around Breaking Young Girls' Hearts
And Mother Always Told Me Be Careful Of Who You Love
And Be Careful Of What You Do 'Cause The Lie Becomes The Truth

    [Chorus]
Billie Jean Is Not My Lover
She's Just A Girl Who claims That I Am The One
But The Kid Is Not My Son
She Says I Am The One, But The Kid Is Not My Son

    [3rd Verse]
For Forty Days And Forty Nights
The Law Was On Her Side
But Who Can Stand When She's In Demand
    Her Schemes And Plans
'Cause We Danced On The Floor In The Round
So Take My Strong Advice, Just Remember To Always Think Twice
    (Do Think Twice)

    [4th Verse]
She Told My Baby We'd Danced 'Till Three
    Then She Looked At Me
Then Showed A Photo My Baby Cried
    His Eyes Looked Like Mine
Go On Dance On The Floor In The Round, Baby

    [Bridge]
People Always Told Me Be Careful Of What You Do
And Don't Go Around Breaking Young Girls' Hearts
She Came And Stood Right By Me
Then The Smell Of Sweet Perfume
    This Happened Much Too Soon
She Called Me To Her Room

    [Chorus]
Billie Jean Is Not My Lover
She's Just A Girl Who claims That I Am The One
But The Kid Is Not My Son
Billie Jean Is Not My Lover
She's Just A Girl Who claims That I Am The One
But The Kid Is Not My Son
She Says I Am The One, But The Kid Is Not My Son
She Says I Am The One, But The Kid Is Not My Son
Billie Jean Is Not My Lover
She's Just A Girl Who claims That I Am The One
