Well, usually it’s behind a paywall at Prime Video, so that they’ve made it available free for a week on YouTube could be seen as a blatant way of luring people into Season 3…

I’ve only watched the first couple of episodes but found it vaguely amusing and well made. Probably I’ll watch a few more, though I don’t see myself subscribing to Amazon Prime for season 3.

I’ve listened to only a bit of Critical Role, I find it too long to really get into. The highlights shows are quite fun, those suit me better.

That makes more sense. I see that a lot, where free or deeply discounted trials are offered to get people in, not unlike a drug dealer.

Yeah, I borrow my sister's account.

They are really long, I can't sit down and watch the stream. I listen to the audio while working.

I'm enjoying Arcane on Netflix. I don't normally go for animated stuff, but I really like the style of this and I'm drawn to the magicy steam punkish theme. More than that though the story has nuance and moral complexity. There aren't teams of people that are good vs teams of people who are bad, like in something like Star Wars. There's a heavy class element in the world, but there are upper and lower class individuals who are good and there are those who are bad. And the good and bad are complex as well, two people with good intentions can be at conflict due to differing values or focuses.

  • Huge fan of Gladiator (1) here.
    Watched Gladiator 2 yesterday.
    Terrible movie, on every level.
Sincere tip: do not watch it, no FOMO necessary.

Deadpool and Wolverine is streaming on Disney+ now. They didn't Disneyfy it, it still has all the old Deadpool sarcastic nihilism. So if you liked the other Deadpool's you'll like this one.

I found ‘Buy Now’ a bit sensationalist… of course businesses are going to try and manipulate you with different messages, of course they are going to try and optimise their website to maximise sales. I’ve been a long time minimalist, buying only what I really need to replace the things that wear out. So for me this docu was rather preaching to the choir.

I found this an interesting video. It’s basically about getting the most from life, he has some good tips about how to approach your later years.

I think I'm like you in that the push for optimization and maximization in retail doesn't really sway me to consume. I like the convenience and availability these days.

To me the take away was less about the impact it has on me personally, though I think I may double down on my tendency to buy quality over cost ($200 boots that last 5x as long as $40 boots). It was more about the larger impact on society as a whole.

The part about planned obsolescence and the inability to repair things or replace batteries, etc. spoke to me. As well as a comment about the inefficiency of the current state of things, how its cost effective to be wasteful. Something about that equation is broken.

EDIT: I remember what I thought about the broken equation. That costs are externalized and socialized while profits are internalized and individualized. Its very much a tragedy of the commons, where no one is responsible for the shared environmental and social realm. Like animals grazing on shared land, if everyone is free to use it without a sense of responsibility then the land quickly becomes overgrazed and unusable while the shepherds who used it got the benefit.

Yes, it’s interesting, we have a lot in common, and that makes our sharing things extra valuable to me. Your views on D&D have been particularly appreciated, as an insight into the positives of gaming.

Agreed. I recently noticed I needed to replace my usual backpack which I use for day trips and came across this great durable, well designed, but slightly more expensive one (this one). It’s also why I buy Apple tech gear, it’s durable, environmentally responsible, and you can get your products recycled by them. But there are also clothing brands who specialise in more durable items, like Patagonia.

It speaks to me as well, I am a fan of right-to-repair legislation and find it frustrating that the law is moving so slowly. It’s a good thing the EU is doing some things in that direction, and the State of California too.

Jeroen…I don’t think you were the intended demographic. It’s very driven towards Gen Z and millennials…and Gen A….like my kids. They are second generation Ghanaians here, and I still find myself talking to wall when trying to emphasize that their Grandmas back yard has turned into a discarded clothes wasteland. They are the instant buyers…the instant gratification kids…I withheld phones until the age of 18, but they quickly made up for it on online shipping now that they make their own money. We old folks have moved usually and have already had to fight our inventory of crap once or twice…so we already know.and the crap wasn’t as cheap and accessible to us….And I would argue that even people that are mindful about not overbuying, don’t usually think about the end of life of these products…where they end up.

One of my nephews doesn't take after the rest of the family and tends to be pretty materialist. He really wants to be rich and likes getting new things that he's interested in for 5 days before forgetting it exists.

That's just preamble to talking about Temu. I had heard about the way they use social media/gambling methods to get people to buy more stuff. This summer he was trying to get people to subscribe through him so he could qualify to get a bunch of free junk.

There are things going on that us olds aren't generally aware of because we don't engage with it.

The thing about this problem that I find hopeful is that so many of the issues raised in the doc are things my more conservative family find distasteful. Consumerism, materialism, cheap junk that doesn't last, inefficiency and waste. So I think there is a lot of potential for strong bipartisan support for addressing the problem if the message can be packaged correctly.

Same with my son…he has a YT channel and a couple vids went viral..which meant..after he saw a big check and knew the marketing potential….he like a lot of kids his age, think it’s a way to get rich. He pushes his own merch , which of course is fast fashion, a bunch of overpriced cheap shit.

No, my habits are more like this video… although I’m not so extreme tracking my spending.

No, you’re right, I’m not the impulse-buyer type, I resist most forms of advertising with ferocity, I am in fact the anti-consumer. I think in a way the consumer attitude comes from people having it reasonably easy - having enough money to get what you want, always. During big stretches of my childhood money was tight, my parents were not rich, and most purchases were carefully considered. Add to that my own environmentalist attitude and liking for durable things, and voila. But then, I’ve been like this for my whole life - I only buy what I need, minor hobbies aside, and touch the Earth lightly.
